Deep Detox with Ayurveda
In HOLISTIC LIVING we take care that our body stays clean. It is not always necessary to spend an incredible amount of money or to travel to the other end of the world for a Deep Detox of your body. Nature supply us with all we need – from water and sun to fresh air or herbals. Here you get ideas, how to detox in a natural and very effective way according to Yoga and Ayurveda Medicine, the oldest Holistic Health Systems of mankind.
Ancient sages observed that nature has a very effective way of purification. They observed that animals are vomiting or having loose motions and eat grass or herbs instinctively, when they feel sick and get well soon. They consciously applied these methods on themselves and after some time, they came to know what works for a Deep Detox in human beings. They developed a systematic cleansing, which we find in the ancient texts of Yoga and Ayurveda.
Today these methods are still used in India and most parts of Asia, such as the Panchakarma Treatment, which consists of five cleansing steps and is considered the as most effective medical detox treatment – if performed in the classical manner – which includes a personalized approach.
The goal, however, is to avoid a medical emergency in the first place, but rather to cleanse oneself repeatedly at home, either weekly, monthly, or at least once or twice a year for 21 days. The following Vedic recommendations for cleansing in daily life are very helpful for this.
Our Body is a Detox Maschine
In general our body cleanses and detoxifies itself. It is a real detox machine when it comes to eliminate metabolic waste products, excess of acids and toxins. There are several physical levels for detox which range from cleansing the intestines and body channels to purifying our cells and tissues. We just need to know, how these different detox stations are working and how to keep them intact.
Actually you need to detox regularly, especially if you live and eat unhealthy sometimes, which literally poisons your body. There are also environmental toxins which enter our body through air or through the skin, which needs to be removed regularly.
Most harmful are the waste products of our metabolism, which are by-products and mostly acidic by nature. If they are not properly broke down or removed, they increase in our blood and tissues. This metabolites disrupt the acid-base balance, block the metabolism and regeneration of the body. In general this happens, when we are continuously in stress and our detox systems like liver and kidneys are overwhelmed and exhausted, because of the influence of stress hormones.
An excess of stress hormones always has a very negative effect on our body – mentally and physically, like being restless or dizzy, or create various severe diseases like autoimmune disorders or cancer. Most important is the fact that they inhibit proper cleansing on cellular level. To clean the body in-depth, we need to activate the body`s own detox by aligning our food habits and activities in daily life to purification. And that means relaxation in the first place.
Deep Detox by a relaxed and serene mind
First, we have to avoid stress by not getting upset in the first place, to prevent that more toxins and acids are produced in the body. Only in a state of relaxation and joy our body is able to break down or neutralize all excess stress hormones, metabolic by-products and toxins, while stressful situation or any kind of negative emotions like anger or grief stop the cleansing.
If you truly desire a profound detox and want to stay clean, then you should remain relaxed in every situation. You can achieve a relaxed mind and serenity by through regular MEDITATION, and physical exercise. Another method to calm down, is a break from the daily routine like a “Timeout” for a few days, so the cells in the body can reset and cleanse themselves.
We also need to take care, that whatever comes in our body or touches it, like food, cosmetics, clothes, toys, furniture – almost everything – should be from a natural source and should support a frequent detox.
Stay Calm and Detox
Deep Detox with BOWEL CLEANSING
According to Holistic Medicine Systems like Ayurveda, first physical step in any Detox program is Bowel Cleansing. The cleansing of the body happens primarily through physical secretions such as urine and stool as well as sweat, tears or nasal secretion. According to ayurvedic teachings, the bowel cleansing is considered to be most effective in detoxification. Ideally we create diarrhea, to get all the toxins and waste products removed from the colon, the lower part of the intestines. This has a very positive effect on the blood, liver and kidneys, because if no or less waste is entering the body the cleansing and regeneration of cells and tissues gets activated.
For bowel cleansing we use castor oil or Triphala powder in Ayurveda, which contains three fruits with los of bitter substances, which have an extraordinary cleansing effect. A decoction is prepared from the powder with hot boiling water and drink it when Luke warm. Another great method is using magnesium salts, especially magnesium oxide which promotes the peristaltic of the intestines. For proper bowel cleansing we recommend to consult an experienced holistic physician, who guides you in your detox, especially if you suffer from any disease.
Deep Detox with Bitter Substances
In all Holistic Medicine Systems bitter substances from plants are used to detox the body. Most powerful are Triphala, Guduchi, Turmeric, Neem, Gentian or Artichokes. They contain bioactive substances, which promote metabolism, the cleansing of the cells, regeneration and rejuvenation. Algae like Chlorella or Spirulina are also great. After the detox period all these remedies can be taken on a daily base to help the body stay clean.
Deep Detox with Pure Water
You don’t need an expensive detox treatment if you regularly drink plenty of pure water that is low in minerals. Take water with less minerals, so more water can enter the cells according to the law of osmosis. This also helps to get toxins and waste products out of your cells. Don’t drink tap water in cities, unless the water quality has been tested and is really good. How much water you need to drink, depends on your constitution, your current state of health, your physical activities and the climate in which you live.
In general the amount of water an individual needs ranges between 2-4 liters per day. Find out, which amount is best for you. Drink several glasses of luke warm or hot water in the morning. This way, the metabolic products in the blood and urinary tract, which are produced over night, are washed out. Also consume plenty of liquid foods such as soups and fruits.
Deep Detox with Clean Eating
All Holistic Medicine Systems recommend an ALKALINE DIET with bitter and alkaline food items, teas and nutritional supplements for cleansing the body. The best detoxifiers on earth are Curcuma (Turmeric) and Neem. Mediterranean herbs, rocket and endive salads, artichokes and chicory or bitter gourd, called Karela in India, also contain many bitter substances. Integrate these food items to your diet. Support your detox with alkaline baths, special salts which neutralize acidic substances from your skin. An alkaline diet is also about avoiding acidic foods. This includes products containing vinegar, tomatoes, and nightshades as well as citrus fruits and berries – with the exception of blueberries.

Deep Detox with a healthy microbiom
The majority of the detox work in our body is done by our good intestinal bacterias, our microbiome. You have billions of friends living in your colon, who eradicate toxins and acids and cleanse our entire intestines. However, we need to feed them well with lots of fibers from fresh and green vegetables, ripe fruits and herbals.
They are very sensitive and don’t grow under stress. They also don’t tolerate improper nutrition. This is because food items, which are not digested properly, create sticky particles and slugs in our intestines, which suffocate the good bacterias and allow pathogen bacterias to grow, who produce lots of toxins. If you notice a bad smell of stool and gases and if you suffer from constipation, you can be sure, that you need an intestinal cleansing and to rebuild your microbiome.
Find an experienced holistic doctor and do a test, which gives information, which type and number of good intestinal bacterias are living in your colon. If some important bacterias are missing, you can eat yoghurt, but only if you can digest milk products. In addition you need to take probiotics – ideally in capsule form – otherwise the bacterias will suffer from the stomach acid
Deep Detox with Pranayama
The cleansing of our blood in the liver takes mainly place between 10 p.m. and 2-3 a.m. and only in deep sleep. The liver cleanses our blood from toxins, metabolic waste products and hormonal derivates. For a deep detox best is to sleep between 9 to 10 p.m. or earlier. Your sleep is even deeper, if relax after 5 p.m., so no stress hormones are produced, which might make it difficult to fall asleep or to sleep through.
Avoid everything what excites you, like heavy sports, thrilling movies and books or disturbing discussions and news. Do slow stretching exercises, walk in the nature, take a warm bath and perform Yoga Nidra. Be sure to eat your last meal before 7 p.m. so your intestines are not occupied with digestion before sleep.
